The American Skin Association (ASA) has presented three honorees with awards for their outstanding service in combatting skin diseases.
Irwin Braverman, MD, Yale University School of Medicine Professor Emeritus, received the Lifetime Achievement in Education Award for his dedication to mentoring generations of dermatologists. His laboratory has conducted vital dermatological research on topics, including: skin microcirculation’ cutaneous changes associated with chronological aging, actinic damage and diabetes mellitus; and the pathogenesis of cutaneous T cell lymphoma.
John Kirkwood, MD, Usher Professor of Medicine, Dermatology and Translational Science at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School and co-leader of the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Program at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, received the Leadership in Melanoma Research, Treatment and Prevention Award for his achievements in melanoma research. The ASA recognized his leadership, for more than four decades, in the development of immunotherapy—particularly, the first FDA-approved immunotherapy of melanoma. Dr. Kirkwood has trained more than 200 fellows, many of whom are now leaders of melanoma investigation across the U.S. and in Europe.
Nestlé Skin Health Investigation Education Longevity Development (SHIELD) received the Corporate Leadership Award. SHIELD is a global network of innovation and education hubs, the first of which will open in New York City in fall 2016, that gathers creative and visionary thinkers from diverse disciplines to generate, develop and incubate ideas to advance skin health for tomorrow. SHIELD aims to elevate, change and advance the conversation on skin health.
