Body Contouring Risks Greater for Men

Male patients undergoing post-bariatric body contouring surgeries are at an increased risk for hematoma and seroma, according to a new study in the journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (August 2012). Researchers, led by Tae Chong, MD, of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center reviewed the cases of 481 patients undergoing body contouring treatments, 10% of the patients were male. The overall complication rate was 42%. Hematomas occurred in 14.6% of male patients vs. 3.5% of female. Seromas occurred in 25% of men vs. 13% of women. The study noted that the most common procedures for men involved removing excess tissue in the chest, back and arms. Women were more likely to undergo surgery on the thighs and buttocks.
