Botox Safe for Continuous Antiaging Use

The results of a retrospective review presented at the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) 2014 Annual Meeting show that repeated Botox Cosmetic treatment over many years is safe and effective. Furthermore, botulinum toxin injections can be safely used in conjunction with other aesthetic treatments.

ASDS member Alastair Carruthers, FRCPC, et al, interviewed and assessed the charts of almost 200 patients who received Botox for glabellar frown lines for five or more years from 1999 to 2012. The patients (average age 46.3 years at time of first treatment) underwent two or more treatments per year over an average of nine years. The majority—85%—received other facial aesthetic treatments concurrently with the Botox, Adverse events were mild and infrequent.

The researchers also noted that since 1999, dosages of Botox for treating horizontal forehead lines have decreased in order to achieve more natural-looking outcomes, while dosages for treating crow’s feet and glabellar lines have not changed significantly.
