A reduction in the ratio of lipid and protein bands in the stratum cornuem has been linked to skin barrier impairment in patients with atopic eczema. Researchers M. Janssens, et al, of Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, the Netherlands and RiverD International, performed a case-control study comparing lesional and non-lesional atopic eczematous skin with the skin of healthy controls. Raman spectroscopy was used to determine the ratio between lipid and protein. Skin barrier function was assessed by transepidermal water loss.

Researchers at the Drexel University College of Medicine are providing new insight into what causes the itchiness and rash associated with eczema, the most common form of which is atopic dermatitis (AD). As reported in the online edition of JAMA Dermatology, Herbert B. Allen, MD, professor and chairman of the Department of Dermatology at Drexel University College of Medicine, and colleagues, discovered that staphylococcal bacteria, which are normally found on the skin surface, produce a biofilm in eczema patients that blocks the sweat ducts.

The guidelines also discuss measurements for disease severity and quality of life, as well as associated conditions that commonly affect patients with atopic dermatitis.
