Almirall S.A. Acquires Aqua Pharmaceuticals Holdings

RoundTable Healthcare Partners, an operating-oriented private equity firm focused exclusively on the healthcare industry, has entered into a definitive agreement to sell Aqua Pharmaceuticals Holdings to Almirall S.A. for up to $402.6 million in cash. Aqua is a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on acquiring, developing and marketing branded, prescription dermatology products, including Monodox (doxycycline monohydrate) capsules; Cordran topical corticosteroid lotion and cream; Fluoroplex (fluorouracil) cream; Xolegel (ketoconazole) Gel; and Verdeso (desonide) Foam.

Now a new in vivo study, “Promotional Effect of Platelet-Rich Plasma on Hair Follicle Reconstitution in vivo” (Dermatologic Surgery, December 2013), reveals that a 10% concentration of PRP, when added to cultured epidermal and dermal papilla cells, increases hair density.

The American Academy of Dermatology has released new evidence-based guidelines for the diagnosis and assessment of atopic dermatitis based on an extensive review of the scientific literature. Published online in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (December 2, 2103), the first of four sections in the guidelines of care focus on methods for diagnosing and monitoring atopic dermatitis. The guidelines also discuss measurements for disease severity and quality of life, as well as associated conditions that commonly affect patients with atopic dermatitis.

The list was developed as part of the ABIM Foundation’s (www.abimfoundation.org) Choosing Wisely initiative, which was developed to reduce the overuse of unnecessary medical tests and procedures by encouraging dialogue between patients and physicians.
