Restylane Silk Approved For Lip Augmentation With Blunt Tip Cannula

Lip Augmentation with Blunt Tip Cannula

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of a small blunt tip cannula with Galderma’s Restylane Silk for lip augmentation. Restylane Silk was the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal filler specifically designed for lip augmentation and the smoothing of wrinkles around the mouth in patients 21 years of age and older and is now the first HA dermal filler to be approved for lip injection via cannula.

Easing Pain During Lip Injections

A split-lip study, published in Aesthetic Surgery (October 2017) has revealed that vibration can reduce the pain of filler injections during lip augmentation. Authors Kirdar Guney, MD, Billur Sezgin, MD, and Reha Yavuzer, MD, used vibration stimulus on 25 patients undergoing lip augmentation with a hyaluronic acid filler. Patients were asked to score the pain during treatment on a scale of 0 to 10 (0 being no pain and 10 the worst pain they had ever felt) for each half of their lips.

Assessing Ideal Lip Dimensions

In an effort to establish guidelines to aid practitioners in achieving optimal aesthetic outcomes during cosmetic lip augmentation, Brian J. F. Wong, MD, PhD, et al, sought to evaluate the most attractive lip dimensions in Caucasian women. Assessments were based on attractiveness ranking of surface area, ratio of upper to lower lip, and dimensions of the lip surface area relative to the lower third of the face.

The key to natural-looking lip augmentation lies in understanding facial anatomy and patient expectations.

Lip augmentation is one of the few aesthetic concerns that bridges all age groups. Young patients often come to practices seeking larger, more lustrous lips; while aging patients are dismayed at loss of definition and the appearance of perioral lines and wrinkles. In order to create the aesthetic outcomes these patients seek, one must gain an understanding of their desired outcomes and step back to examine the entire lower face.

Achieving natural-looking results in perioral rejuvenation requires an examination of facial anatomy and an understanding of the wide range of treatment tools available.

“Marketing your expertise with lips is a very successful practice enhancer,” says cosmetic dermatologist Stephen H. Mandy, MD, of South Beach Dermatology in Miami Beach, Florida. That’s not surprising given the focus many people put on the lips. Though the eyes may be one of the first areas to show signs of aging, the allure of sultry, full lips continues to drive young and older patients alike to seek cosmetic enhancement for the perioral area.

Restylane Becomes First Approved Lip Filler

Restylane Receives FDA Approval for Lip Augmentation

The United States Food and Drug Administration has expanded the approved usage of RESTYLANE Injectable Gel (Medicis Aesthetics) to include lip augmentation. RESTYLANE was previously approved to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and nasolabial folds. Its new label will include an indication for submucosal implantation for lip augmentation in patients over the age of 21. In addition, the RESTYLANE package insert will be amended to include both the new indication and results from the clinical trials for lip augmentation.
