Connecticut Adopts Bill Allowing Sunscreen Use in Schools

SUNucate Map of United States

Connecticut has adopted legislation that allows students, with permission from a parent or guardian, to self-apply sunscreen during the school day. Senate bill 922 is based on SUNucate model legislation, developed by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Association (ASDSA). It allows students six years or older to possess and self-apply over-the-counter sunscreen in school before outdoor activities, if a parent or guardian has provided written authorization to the school nurse. Connecticut is the 23rd state—and sixth state this year—to enact such legislation.

Ohio becomes seventh state to pass ASDSA SUNucate legislation

Ohio is seventh state to improve access to sunscreens

In July, Ohio became the seventh state to pass SUNucate legislation, a nationwide effort led by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Association (ASDSA). The law eliminates barriers prohibiting students from possessing and using over-the-counter sunscreen by exempting these products from ”medication bans” in schools that require a physician’s note or prescription.

In addition to Ohio, Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, Utah and Washington state have also approved similar measures this year.

Broad-spectrum su protection products are one of the most effective tools available for patients who want to maintain the youthful health of their skin and ward off the signs of aging. “I always recommend daily sunscreen use for everyone. It’s as important as brushing your teeth or wearing a seatbelt,” says Brian Matthys, DO, medical director of Sunflower Dermatology and Medical Spa in Riverside, Missouri.

One out of five Americans will get skin cancer, and although melanoma incidence is higher in Caucasians, the five-year survival rates for African Americans (78%) are significantly lower than that of Caucasians (92%). This is due to the common misconception that protection from the sun is not necessary for those with darker skin tones.
