FDA Approves DeScribe PFD Patch for Tattoo Removal

The DeScribe Transparent PFD (perfluorodecalin) Patch from ON Light Sciences has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for use in laser tattoo removal.

The patch, which is placed over tattoos prior to irradiation, allows physicians to treat tattoos more efficiently than conventional techniques by enabling rapid multiple laser passes in a single treatment session.

“We have seen considerable advantages in using the PFD Patch,” said Brian Biesman, MD, clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and principal investigator for the company’s pivotal clinical trial. “It allows multiple passes in a few minutes and typically delivers better outcomes and higher patient satisfaction than conventional single-pass methods.”

“As the incidence of tattoos continues to rise, the number of people looking for tattoo removal is also rapidly increasing,” said Robert Grove, PhD, chairman of ON Light Sciences. “Before the introduction of the DeScribe Patch, a physician could perform only one laser pass during a patient visit because the treatment area turns white and opaque. Our patch reduces this effect allowing multiple passes in a single session, making the entire procedure simpler and more attractive.”
