There is a new promising anti-aging ingredient on the block, and though it might not sound desirable, the results are something we should pay attention to. There is a new promising anti-aging ingredient on the block, and though it might not sound desirable, the results are something we should pay attention to. In the American Chemical Society journal ACS Omega, researchers reported that molecules found in fish gut bacteria showed both skin-brightening and anti-wrinkle properties.
The microbes from wester Pacific Ocean fish red seabream and the blackhead seabream were first identified in 1992 and 2016, but researchers did not dig into the compounds they made at that time.
That was until Hyo-Jong Lee, Chung Sub Kim and others wanted to see if these bacteria produce any metabolite compounds that could have cosmetic benefits.
The team identified 22 molecules made by the gut bacteria of the red seabream and blackhead seabream. They then evaluated each compound’s ability to inhibit tyrosinase and collagenase enzymes in lab-grown mouse cells.
Three molecules from the red seabream bacteria inhibited both enzymes the best without damaging the cells, making them promising anti-wrinkle and skin-brightening agents for future cosmetic products.
Don't expect seabream products to be on the shelf tomorrow, as It should be noted that research on the fish gut bacteria from seabream is still in its early stages. That being said, with so many exciting medicinal and topical technologies coming out of fish research, we are excited to see what seabream can bring to skin care.
