The 1st of August marks the official start of Hair Loss Awareness Month (HLAM), more relevant than ever with headlines of Covid Related Hair Shedding and Alopecia Areata permeating the media. According to the American Hair Loss Association, at least 80 million men and women in the United States currently suffer from hair loss.

In response to this hair loss crisis in our country and the beginning of hair loss awareness month, ABHRS-Certified Hair Restoration Surgeon Alan J. Bauman, MD, discussed the latest treatments and technology available for restoring and preserving hair in a recent press release.

Here are a few of his recommendations:

  • Alma “TransEpidermal Delivery” (TED) utilizes low-frequency “ultrasonic” sound waves combined with air pressure to penetrate the skin with potent topical hair growth treatments, promoting increased blood flow that improves scalp health, hair growth and minimizes shedding.
  • HairMetrix is a groundbreaking non-invasive hair measurement tool that uses Artificial Intelligence to analyze in real-time metrics such as hair density and caliber. This tool allows physicians to conduct consultations, clinical hair growth research and follow-ups without requiring a physical hair sample.
  • Olumiant (baricitinib), an oral JAK (Janus Kinase or JAK-STAT signaling pathway) inhibitor, is the first FDA approved systemic treatment for severe adult autoimmune Alopecia Areata.
