LLLT Upregulates Proteins in Dermal Papilla

Low level light therapy (LLLT) significantly up‐regulated 11 proteins and down‐regulated two proteins in the dermal papilla (DP), offering a potential explanation of its mechanism of action in hair regrowth. Researchers Ratchathorn Panchaprateep MD, PhD, et al, obtained punch scalp biopsy specimens from male patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) before and after LLLT treatment. Subjects used an at-home, helmet-type LLLT device (655 nm, 5 mW) for 25 minutes every other day for 24 weeks.

Novan Receives Additional Funding to Support Its Nitric Oxide-Based Therapies

Novan has entered into a common stock purchase agreement with Aspire Capital Fund, LLC, a Chicago-based institutional investor. The agreement provides additional financing to fund Novan’s nitric oxide technology platform, which has potential indications in dermatology, women’s health and gastroenterology. The company currently has four nitric oxide-based products with dermatologic indications in the pipeline, including SB204 for acne, SB206 for molloscum, SB208 for tinea pedis, and SB414 for the treatment of atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.

ASDS Annual Survey Reveals Increase in Cosmetic and Skin Cancer Treatments

There was a 7.5 percent increase in demand for cosmetic procedures in 2018, according to the results of the 2018 American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) member survey, and a 60 percent increase since 2012. ASDS members performed 3.5 million skin cancer treatments and nearly nine million cosmetic treatments last year.

Hologic, a device manufacturer specializing in women’s health and parent company to Cynosure, has acquired approximately 46 percent of SuperSonic Imagine, a company that specializes in ultrasound medical imaging.

SuperSonic Imagine’s main shareholders, namely Bpifrance, Andera Partners, Auriga Partners, Mérieux Participations and CDC PME Croissance, holding together 10,841,409 shares, representing approximately 46 percent of the outstanding share capital of SuperSonic Imagine, sold all of their shares to Hologic at a price of €1.50 per share.

Google Trends, a free online tool, can help medical aesthetic practices identify patient interest in specific procedures both by region and season. In the August 2019 issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, Jonathan D. Tijerina, et al, reviewed Google Trends search terms from January 2004 to December 2017. Then compared that data to annual procedure statistics reports of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) from 2006 to 2017 and American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) from 2004 to 2017.
