Per an Oct. 9 press release, about 90% of SkinMedica’s packaging components by weight—and all secondary cartons—are recyclable under its new packaging, resulting in a 71% reduction in landfill waste.
Micro-plastics continue to infiltrate the environment, and with an industry as large as cosmetics, including makeup, skincare and more, many products come in single-use plastic packaging, which contributes to the growing problem of plastic pollution [1]. Cosmetic consumption has surged, with the market projected to grow from over $354 billion in 2025 to over $556 billion by 2032 [2].
In 2025, biodegradability has become crucial in packaging design, and it's a component many beauty brands have integrated and thought about with as much depth as the ingredients going in its packaging, especially given the fact that overproduction and perishing of ingredients play a large role in waste distribution in our landfill [3].
SkinMedica’s HA5 Hydra Collagen Water Burst Moisturizer was designed to provide up to 24 hours of hydration while supporting the skin’s barrier and microbiome. It is intended to be used alone or layered with the HA5 Hydra Collagen Replenish + Restore Hydrator to enhance hydration, expanding the brand’s collection focused on skin moisture and barrier health.
The moisturizer blends five forms of hyaluronic acid with prebiotics, a plant-based carbohydrate and lactobacillus ferment, that helps support the skin barrier, maintain the skin's natural microbiome and protect the skin from environmental aggressors.
All remaining SkinMedica products will transition to the new packaging in 2026, including the TNS Advanced+ Serum, Even & Correct Advanced Brightening Treatment, AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser and the Essential Defense Mineral Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 35 Sunscreen.
"The refreshed packaging represents the next chapter of SkinMedica, bringing clarity, confidence and sustainability to every touchpoint," said Glen Curran, senior vice president for U.S. Allergan Aesthetics.
