From a design perspective, Neenah can color match anything from fabrics to metals. But how does the company ensure consistent color from run to run when converting in different geographic regions?

According to Neenah, the key is that the board is all manufactured at Neenah’s facilities. While printing color onto standard boards may differ at different converting sites, Neenah offers board that is dyed and color-matched during the paper-making process. The company then works with distribution partners around the world to ensure its board reaches whichever printing and converting sites customers are using.

Neenah’s PC White Hemp and Kraft options offer high post-consumer waste (PCW) content at 80%. But are there technical limitations when adding custom textures like linen or special finishes like pearlized to these high-recycled-content boards—without compromising the premium look consumers expect from paper packaging?

According to Neenah, adding a finish, such as linen, to high post-consumer paper and boards is not a problem, and would likely make the board feel even more premium. Neenah also offers many other finishes that can be created on-machine as the paper is being made (such as a felt finish) or off-machine with embossing rolls (such as linen, stipple and others). The supplier has even made custom embossing rolls that put a brand’s signature pattern into the paper, offering security/fraud protection and a one-of-a-kind look. That said, pearlized coatings are not available on high PCW content paper or hemp-infused paper. Each customization is dependent on many factors and would involve a collaborative conversation.

Another key selling point for Neenah’s board is that it is beater-dyed. The beater-dyed papers do not change the durability of a board, but instead provide a solid consistent color for visible edges, as well as the entire surface of the board—front, back and internal. The color will not eliminate cracking on folds, but rather disguise any slight cracking that sometimes occurs during scoring, folding and assembly. What many brands don’t consider when printing solid color onto a white board, is that they may end up with white edges that become highly visible when the box is converted, and even more visible with slight wear and tear.
