Johnny Franco MD, FACS, says that as more people seek GLP-1 as a weight loss solution, a new demographic of “aesthetic-naïve” patients are entering the field of medaesthetics. They may be hesitant to pursue treatment due to uncertainty of outcomes or downtime, but driven by their weight loss journeys, patients will be looking for aesthetic treatments to complement their transformations, he adds.
A recent KFF poll found that about one in eight U.S. adults have taken a GLP-1 at one point in their life, and a recent NLM study revealed “significant” correlations between GLP-1 use and increased body contouring surgeries.
“Weight loss often serves as the catalyst; once patients achieve their initial goals, they begin exploring additional options to enhance their quality of life, from skincare and preventive measures to peptides and muscle-building therapies,” Franco says.
Addressing After Concerns
In 2025, Franco says certain treatments are set to stand out. Fat replacement products—such as Alloclae, he says, will likely become key tools in addressing the volume loss that accompanies significant weight loss. Fat replacement innovations will help restore balance and proportion, Franco says, offering patients more “natural, harmonious” outcomes.
Since weight gain and struggles with obesity are universal, more men will seek medical aesthetic solutions following weight loss, Franco says, and medical aesthetic practitioners can expect to see an increase of male patients. This new demographic will require approaches that resonate with men interested in non-invasive and muscle-building treatments, Franco adds.
“The term ‘muscle men’ may take on new meaning as we learn to connect with this growing patient base in a way that truly matters to them,” Franco says.
For women using GLP-1 and experiencing volume loss and skin elasticity, the lower body will be a focus for this demographic, Franco says.
“Many women label any lower-body imperfection—be it skin laxity, texture changes or volume loss—as ‘cellulite,’” he adds.
He says body-specific fillers and targeted lower-body rejuvenation–options that have increasingly become available–can smooth skin and restore lost volume to achieve a balanced look to women’s rapid weight loss.
GLP-1 has enabled many patients to undergo their weight loss journeys and bring them back to their confidence. However, as these medications reshape patients’ bodies, they may not anticipate skin elasticity and volume loss. By embracing innovative treatments and tailored approaches, Franco says, the aesthetics landscape can meet patients where they are.
“...Our research is showing that many people who engage in medical weight loss are often more interested in aesthetics afterwards,” says Micah Bregman, vice president of global strategy and pipeline at Allergan Aesthetics. “GLP-1 medications transformed the weight loss landscape, but they often come with changes in skin elasticity and facial volume that patients might not anticipate.”
Preventive Measures for Long Term Results Invite a Wellness Journey
Although ‘after’ aesthetics have become a focus following rapid weight loss, there is a transformation and wellness process that medical aesthetic practitioners can participate in throughout a patient’s weight loss journey, Franco says.
He says by prioritizing skin health and incorporating collagen-stimulating treatments early on, patients can maintain firmness, prevent unwanted laxity, and preserve a more youthful appearance throughout their weight loss journey.
According to Allergen Aesthetics, preventative treatments with a personalized approach will benefit patients in the long run, helping them achieve subtle improvements over time.
“As GLP-1 usage continues to rise, so will the demand for holistic approaches that address both health and aesthetic concerns,” Franco says. “This is our chance to guide patients through every step of their wellness and transformation journey.”
The weight loss revolution has introduced a new set of needs to address, as people’s aesthetic journey may not only start due to GLP-1 use, but the results of their weight loss become complex to each person and the shape of their body. Patients, Franco says, are taking a more holistic, natural approach to their personal care, focusing on treatments that improve their health and appearance, rather than a single treatment to fix a concern.
“By meeting them where they are and guiding them through each stage of their journey, we have a valuable opportunity to connect with this new generation of patients and help them feel their very best, inside and out,” Franco says.
