Inolex recently launched ProCondition 22 (INCI: Brassicamidopropyl Dimethylamine), a novel ingredient designed to replace quats commonly used in hair and skin care products. Quats such as behentrimonium chloride (BTAC), cetrimonium chloride (CTAC) and stearamidopropyl dimethylamine (SAPDMA) are effective but have raised concerns due to their potential to irritate skin, harm aquatic ecosystems and leave buildup on hair and skin.
Biodegradable and Sensorial
ProCondition 22 offers an alternative for formulators seeking to create quat-free products. Per the company, it is biodegradable, non-irritating and works by forming lamellar gel networks that condition hair, emulsify formulations and moisturize skin. These lamellar liquid crystals reportedly mimic the natural structure of skin and hair, creating a soft, non-greasy feel.
Smoothing and Conditioning Hair
ProCondition 22 is designed to smooth lifted cuticles, seal the hair shaft, and reduce friction between strands. These effects improve the appearance and feel of hair, leaving it smoother and less prone to frizz.
Tests on various hair types, including Chinese, European brown and multi-ethnic curly (3A) hair, showed that ProCondition 22 provides comparable wet combability to BTAC in natural conditioning formulas.
It is suitable for use in shampoos, rinse-off conditioners and leave-on treatments.
Immediate and Lasting Skin Hydration
In skin care, ProCondition 22 is designed to provide both immediate and long-lasting hydration. Clinical studies indicate it replenishes moisture within 15 min and maintains hydration for up to 24 hr.
It can be used in a variety of formulations, including emulsions, cleansers, and body washes.
Environmental and Formulation Considerations
ProCondition 22 is made with 83% USDA Certified Biobased Content and is non-palm derived, readily biodegradable and compliant with clean beauty standards. It is also halal certified, kosher compliant, vegan, cruelty-free and listed on China’s IECIC.
